Interesting. As a student of the 79th Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry Regiment, I've wondered about the story behind these steamboats. I'll be posting letters from soldiers from the 77th Pennsylvania and the 79th Pennsylvania who traveled aboard them this week at

No orphans have been mentioned in my reading. I do have one baby born aboard the str Financier II. The baby was named Adam Poe Wilder after the captain. Also I have read a story of two cabin boys who missed their boat's departure on the Missouri. One of the boys travelled overland for six days before overtaking the boat. The other boy drowned crossing a river. Maybe there is a grain of truth in the tale.

I will be my eyes open for data on orphans.

In your research have you ever run across information about orphans on these steadboats being dropped for at different ports. My great-grandfather was one who was dropped off at Rulo, Nebraska around 1864. He was 1/4 indian -- not sure from which tribe, but was told he came down the river. He was taken in by a family in Rulo, Nebraska. Thanks. This website is awesome.

I cannot thank you enough for the work you've done. My family was able to locate a "branch" of our tree through this website. She is Emma McClure, daughter of Elizabeth Poe McClure (Peppard). We would never have found her if not for you. This website is facinating and informative.

On steamboats.org I found a reference to cotton batting. White cotton batting was used to apply linseed oil to steam burns and scalds.

I agree that cotton batting fits the writing on the receipt. Do you have any suggestions for "S Hiat"?

The evidence is extremely thin on whether the Poes owned and/or operated the streamer Columbian.
