On this day 150 years ago, the str Horizon ran the Vicksburg and Grand Gulf batteries with supplies.  Her civilian crew, except for her pilots, was temporarily replaced by Army officers and soldiers.  Badly damaged by shell fire, she ran the gauntlet successfully. [1]  According to the regimental history of the 11th Illinois Infantry, Second Lieutenant James D. Vernay of Company B received the Medal of Honor.  He had been detached as a volunteer to the steamer Horizon during the Vicksburg campaign.  The medal was issued for “Served gallantly as a volunteer with the crew of the steamer Horizon that, under a heavy fire, passed the Confederate batteries.”. [2]

 

The str Horizon was one of six transport steamers repaired to run the Vicksburg batteries after the failures of the “bayou” expeditions.  On 22 Apr 1863, Capt GW Kennard 20th IL Regiment commanded the str Horizon.  His boat left Millikin’s Bend at 9:00 PM.  She steamed slowly to the bend then put on a “full head of steam”.  At the second battery two artillery shots crashed through the bulkhead.  At the next battery two shots hit the hurricane deck.  In total fifteen or sixteen shots hit their target.  All were forward and above the boiler room.

 

After passing the batteries, the str Horizon attempted to go to the assistance of the disabled str Moderator without success.  The str Horizon then went to the aid of the str Anglo-Saxon.   Later that day, the str Horizon was ordered to pass the Warrenton battery a second time and report at New Carthage.  The str Horizon ”steamed up and reported” at New Carthage.[3]

Think for a moment about the power of the Medal of Honor.  To single out for honor one person aboard one steamer would be a fascinating subject to explore.  

 

How different the Civil War would have been without the Ohio River effectively separating much of the nation, North and South!  And how different would have been the outcome without the steamboat , Union men, who knew the chutes, channels, and shoals of the Ohio and its tributaries.

Thomas Washington Poe

If there is a “night shade” hovering over any stone in the Georgetown Cemetery, it would be the spirit of Capt Thomas Washington Poe for good reason.   Capt Thomas Poe was arguably the most far-famed and ill-fated steamboat captain from Georgetown, PA.  Thomas Washington Poe was born in 1819 in New Lisbon, Columbiana Co, OH.  He died on 31 Dec 1881 aboard the str Fearless on his way to Pittsburgh.

Misfortune paid its respects to Capt Thomas Poe many times and often far from home.  On 11 May 1855  the str Georgetown was fatally snagged at Bellefontaine Bluffs on the Missouri in route to a military post.  The  str Georgetown was owned by Thomas W Poe and other partners from Georgetown, PA.  He was the principal owner of the str Clara Poe which went up in flames during the Civil War - burned by rebel forces on 17 Apr 1865 at Eddyville on the Cumberland River.  He also owned the str Amelia Poe which was a complete loss when snagged on the upper Missouri river on 24 May 1868 and salvaged by 1,500 riotous Indians.  And he was the

owner of the str  Nick Wall which met a tragic end on the Mississippi River near Napoleon, AK on 18 Dec 1870.  Here a grisly incident occurred that Mark Twain retold in “Life on the Mississippi”.  The boat struck a snag and sunk rapidly.  Though injured himself by the falling roof, Capt Thomas W Poe attempted to save his wife trapped in a stateroom.  He chopped a hole in the roof with an ax striking the unfortunate Martha Jane (Troxell) Poe in the head.  Martha Jane Poe, fatally wounded, was returned to Georgetown for burial.

 

Although Thomas W died on 31 Dec 1881 aboard the str Fearless on his way to Pittsburgh,  his spirit lived on ― in the courts.  The steamer sank eight months later on 26 Aug 1882 on the Missouri.    The legal case regarding the property loss was finally decided by the Supreme Court of Missouri in Oct 1887― not in favor of the Poe heirs.  This verdict feels perfectly consistent with the trend of Thomas Washington Poe’s lfe.

CivWar150 – 12 Jan 1863

On Jan 12, 1863, the str Kenton was moored near the mouth on the White River according to a personal letter by Lt Cushman K Davis of the 28th Wisconsin Regiment.  Lt Davis was the aide-de-camp to Gen Willis Arnold Gorman.  Approximately 18,000 troops had been transported to the White River from Helena or Napoleon, AR by a fleet of 30 steamers.  The str Kenton steamed five difficult miles up the swollen White River on Jan 13.  According to Lt Davis, the old General spent most of his time in swearing at the pilot who may have been Capt George W Ebert. [1]

 

Imagine the sight.  Amid the noises of the night, thirty packets steaming down the Mississppi.  The average packet was 185 ft x 33 feet not including its wheel.  Its stacks were 50-75 feet high.  With the usual 100 yards between boats that would calculate to nearly four miles of steamboats, bow to wheel, belching black smoke and raining sparks from their stacks.

National Archives Trip 4

It has been far too long since my last post.  Trust me –  it is not due to lack information. 

 

Today ( Thu 2 Aug 2012), I spent the afternoon and early evening at the National Archives in DC.  I am always amazed with the info I collect.  Today I reviewed the Certificates of Enrollment records (Record Group 41) from 16 Mar 1846 through 24 Dec 1849 (Volumes 6629-6632).  Some details about three steamboats in which my Georgetown guys were either principal owners or partners came into my knowledge.  And fourteen (14) keel boats built by  Georgetown rivermen.  

 

Only thirty-two volumes to go to complete my research on certificates of enrollment.  Sixteen books have been reviewed even though I have that uneasy feeling the I have missed important data, and so should redo them.  By the way, since I last viewed the Vessel File (Record Group 92), I have discovered, I have doubled the number of known steamboats from Georgetown.  One more day, or two, for the vessel file ?!?

 

One example of a terrific new find is the str New England.  Until today, I had never seen any info in my inherited boxes to relate the str New England to Georgetown steamboat men.  And, as you well know, I do stretch the thinest threads without shame. 

 

According to Capt Way, the original principle owner and master of the str New England was Capt Samuel B Page.   Capt Way also described the vessel as a sidewheeler, yet the Cert of Enrollment declared her wheel position at the stern.  The str New England was a flagship departing Pittsburgh with soldiers bound for the Mexican War.   

In Mar 1847, the str New England was purchased by Capt George W Ebert who operated the sidewheeler between Pittsburgh and Wheeling till 1849.

Check out the owners of  the str New England in 1847.  Geo W Ebert was my great great grandfather;  Jacob, Andrew and Thomas Poe were brothers and my great great granduncles.  During the Civil War, William J Kountz declared that Gen US Grant was  a “glorious drunk” who should be court marshalled.  Grant arrested William J Kountz who was in charge of procuring river transportation for the war effort in the western theater.  I do not know the relationship of David Wilkins to my Georgetown steamboat men.

 

No doubt that these Georgetown men were touched by history.

Census Data Analysis

Sometime ago, I reviewed the Georgetown census data for 1860 and 1870 to determine whether the steamboat men of Georgetown prospered from their Civil War contracts.  According to the census data, the steamboat captains had accumulated the greatest wealth of any residents of Georgetown.  Comparing the value of real and personal property of the 1860 and 1870 data, showed that the relative position of the captains changed little.  Thomas Poe amassed more wealth than his older brothers, Jacob and Adam.  Their brother-in-law, George W Ebert, was in last place in the 1860 census.  However, only  George W Ebert’s wealth increased between 1860 and 1870.  The wealth of the Poe brothers, Thomas, Jacob, and Adam, decreased by 30-45%.

                         steamers be placed on record for the patriotic
                         and liberal (volunteering) of their services and
                         boats, without renumeration, to proceed
                         immediately to the Cumberland River to
                         relieve the sick and wounded soldiers:
                         Rocket, Capt Wolf; Clara Poe, Capt Poe,
                         Horizon, Capt Stockdale; Emma, Capt
                         Maratta; Westmorland, Capt Evans;
                         Sir William Wallace, Capt Hugh
                         Campbell.

One hundred-fifty years ago, the mayor of Pittsburgh acknowledged the patriotic service of six steamboat captains.  These captains with their boats, without pay, steamed to Tennessee to transport wounded and sick soldiers to Louisville and St Louis.  Captains Thomas W Poe and Jackman T Stockdale were Georgetown steamboat men.   Three of these six boats including the two from Georgetown were destroyed during the war: str Clara Poe, str Horizon, and str Emma.

CW150 str Kenton

On this day 150 years ago (23 Oct 1861) Capt GeorgeW Ebert and Standish Peppard, his brother-in-law and business partner, purchased an interest in the str Kenton.  A short time after the purchase, the Kenton was called to service by the US Army Quartermaster.

The receipt from the Collection of the UW La Crosse Murphy Library Special Collections was signed by GW Ebert and witnessed by S Peppard.  These men and their boat had some great experiences during the war.

Coincidentally, this part of Negley’s brigade left Pittsburgh on one of the six steamboats destined for Louisville.  The  steamboat, the str Clara Poe, commanded by Capt Thomas W Poe from Georgetown, PA, was one of those transports.

Ironton-Lawrenceburg-Vevay

Proceeding on.

Ironton.  My interest in Ironton is the role Capt Thomas S Calhoon and his steamer, Katie Stockdale, played in the delivery of Ohio River relief between Pittsburgh and Ironton after the Flood of 1884.  Details of the relief effort are found in The Mercy Mission.   

 

Ironton was founded in 1849 by John Campbell, a noted pig iron manufacturer.  Until the nearby iron reserves played out and the demand for steel replaced iron, immense wealth was generated.  Many fine residences were built.  Unfortunately the floods of 1917 and 1937 plus the Great Depression devastated the city.

 

Today, I was pleasantly surprised by the buzz in Ironton.  It by far is the most vibrant river town I have passed through.  Its community leaders are obviously  implementing good policies.  It was pouring so I did not get out of my car nor did I talk to anyone.  Like Pt Pleasant, Ironton has a wall between the river and town.  It also has a railroad track and station along the river.  

 

Lawrenceburg.  In 1865 a cub pilot aged nineteen on the sidewheeler CT Dumont made two important trips to Lawrenceburg, IN from Parkersburg, WV.  The occasion the return of Union Soldiers from the Civil War battlefields.  The cub pilot was George WE Poe, the son of Jacob Poe

 

Like many of the other river towns, Lawrenceburg is 200 years old with an appealing main street missed by most highway travelers because of the by-pass.  Early in its history, Lawrenceburg was notorious from Pittsburgh to New Orleans for its sin and vice.  After the advent of steamboat commerce, its “Gamblers Row” grew quickly. 

 

Today Lawrenceburg was surprisingly busy.  Nice main street leading to the “Watch Walk” which is a stone levee and park.  Nice when the weather and  river stage permit.

 

Vevay.  The “Life on the Ohio River” Historical Museum in Vevay, IN was a fun stop.  Its primary connections to Georgetown, PA is the Billy Bryant Showboat and the str CT Dumont.  The Bryants were always guests of Charley Poe when they landed in Georgetown.  In fact the friendship was so strong Billy Bryant dedicated a chapter in his book to Charley Poe who he described as “one of the most fascinating River characters we have ever met”.  At age nineteen while learning the river between Pittsburgh and Louisville, George WE Poe was a cub pilot on the CT Dumont which ferried two crammed loads of returning Civil War soldiers to Lawrenceburg in April 1865. Charley Poe and George WE Poe were brothers.

 

Vevay is a now stilled community of simple businesses and beautiful homes.  It has a wonderful park along its waterfront.  Founded in 1802 by Swiss immigrants, Vevay claims to be the home of the first commercial winery in the US.  Today there is no significant industry to the best of my knowledge.
