Another Find

Thursday, September 27th, 2012

Last weekend I was in Georgetown, PA, packing books that my sister and I donated to local libraries.  In an old box of books, we discovered a “home made” book by Mrs Lillian May Poe Wagner.

The book was a bible study book  – The Divine Plan of the Ages.  Lillian May Poe pasted photographs, newspaper clippings, obituaries, postcards, business cards, and hand written notes over the pages of the study book.  The items are dated from 1904 to 1936.

I will scan and load the important pages – pages with photographs of the Georgetown steamboat captains and their wives, wedding announcements, etc.

A Menu Book and so much more

Monday, April 30th, 2012

I have loaded a summary of a “Menu Book” and a list of “Events to Remember” by Lillian Poe Wagner.  The compositions present an interesting view of Lillian May Poe’s life with Dr Louis H Wagner in Cleveland, OH between the years of 1922 and 1936.  Think of the history of those days!  After the death of her husband, Lillian May Poe returned to Georgetown, PA to care for her father, Charley Poe, who had had a stroke, her uncle, George WE Poe who was 92 years of age, and her first cousin, Parthenia Parr Calhoon, who had lost an eye in 1927.

Lillian May Poe was undoutedly the most esteemed citizen of Georgetown, PA  during the 20th century.

Happy Valentine’s Day

Monday, February 13th, 2012

Four of a series of eighteen vintage Valentine Cards have been loaded in honor of this day.  I do not know to whom the cards belonged.  I do know that all of the cards are quite mean spirited.  Was the spirit of Valentine’s Day softened over the years by Hallmark and specialty chocolatiers?

Ohio River Museum Donation

Ohio River Museum Donation ca 1965

Ohio River Museum Donation ca 1965

This copy of an old newspaper clipping provides the details of a donation to the Wellsville River Museum in Wellsville, OH.  The gifts were presented by people from Georgetown, PA: Capt Albert C Gilmore, Mrs Louis H (Lillian May Poe) Wagner, Mrs Edwin W (Clara Laughlin) Coopper. and Edna E Dawson .  The contributors were all associated with river commerce and river history.  I do not know which local paper carried the article.  Nor do I know the date it was published except that the date was before 1971.

The second paragraph indicates the last pilot’s license of Capt Jacob Poe was donated by Lillian May Poe.  This framed license actually had thirteen licenses stacked.  The Wellsville museum trustees graciously gave me the one dated 11 Dec 1882.  Lilian May also an old Poe family plate.

Glass Plate Negatives

Tuesday, October 20th, 2009

Recently I had digital images made from 15 glass plate negatives.  The date of the photos is 1900 plus and/or minus a year or two or three.  The negatives had been stored in an appropriately sized Christmas card box for many years.   One plate was cracked and several were damaged.  Some images are excellent.  Georgetown had one professional photographer, TD Todd.  I do not know whether he produced these photographs.

The images are loaded as a page called Poe Glass Plate Negatives under Georgetown Photo Galleries.
