William H Turner was the attorney and Mason brother who assisted Capt Joseph MC Calhoon on his deathbed.  Capt Joseph MC Calhoon died at approximately 9:00 PM on 21 Apr 1855 in the Franklin Hotel in Alton, IL.  William H Turner arranged a funeral service at the Franklin House at 4:00 PM on Sunday 22 Apr 1855.  He wrote to Mrs Joseph MC Calhoon, the Clerk of the str Golden Gate, and to Mr Noble in Pittsburgh who was an agent for the vessel.  Those letters and the expense receipts of William H Turner are included in the Anna L and John F Nash Collection. 

 Capt Joseph MC Calhoon died a painful death from cholera.

William H Turner inventoried the belongings of Capt Joseph MC Calhoon finding a sizeable amount of cash on his person.  WIlliam H Turner placed the money in a bank in Alton, IL.  Capt Joseph MC Calhoon’s remains were returned to Georgetown, PA in a harrowing operation during flood conditions by his brother-in-law, Capt George W Ebert, who was commanding the str Washington City
