Str Yorktown b1853

The str Yorktown was a sternwheel packet built in Pittsburgh, PA in 1853 with a rated capacity of 143 tons.  The str Yorktown was a typical Poe family boat.  Capt Jacob Poe was the major owner and Capt George W Ebert was the first master.  The other partners identified in the Certificates of Enrollment were Poe family members and one close friend – James Wilkins.  Capt Ebert ran the boat between Pittsburgh, Cincinnati, and Louisville.  In the winter of 1856-57, the packet was crushed in ice in Cincinnati with several other boats.  [1]
