Predicting Freshets

Dory (Theodore Cochran) Poe was the chief clerk for The Pittsburgh and Cincinnati Packet Line and an expert at predicting freshets.  He was the youngest son of Capt Jacob Poe.  His date of birth was 5 Dec 1861 and he died on 11 Jul 1950.  His older brothers were George WE Poe and Charley Poe.  All three boys were touched by river history.  All three sons maintained rooms in “The Poe House” in Georgetown

I have two bedroom suites from The Poe House which were purported to belong to river boat captains.  That claim may be a stretch.  However, the furniture did belong to the Poe steamboat men whether a pilot, chief clerk, or gentleman I know not.

Civil War Transports

A page, Civil War Transports, has been added to tell the story of the civilian steamboat men from Georgetown who served their country during the Civil War. None achieved much renown during their lifetimes.

Old documents.

My Aunt Frances Finley let me review old Georgetown documents in her possession.  Most of the documents are deeds which follow the transactions of the Jacob Poeproperty.  The earliest deed is dated 1804.  In that deed Samuel Lyon sold Georgetown Lot No 21 to John Christmas for $30.  Lot 21 is “The Poe House“.  In 1850 Jacob Poe bought Lot 21 for $350; in 1873 he sold  it to his son George WE Poe for $3,500. 

 

Another interesting factoid is that Jacob Poe bought “Poe Wood” (Patent Book b page 334 in 1786 and Deed Book G page 204 in 1825).  In 1850, Jacob Poe bought Poe Wood from the heirs of Andrew Poe, the famed Indian fighter.  “Poe Wood”, as the story goes, was granted to Andrew Poe in 1786 by the Commonwealth of VA.  His brother and partner in the famous battle, Adam, was also granted a Patent named “Poesville”.  The disposition of that property is unknown.

 

Another interesting document is a Debt Judgment.  In 1811 Thomas Smith won a judgment against William Carneagy for a sum of $47.18.  Samuel Power was the High Sheriff of Beaver County at the time.

Ironton-Lawrenceburg-Vevay

Proceeding on.

Ironton.  My interest in Ironton is the role Capt Thomas S Calhoon and his steamer, Katie Stockdale, played in the delivery of Ohio River relief between Pittsburgh and Ironton after the Flood of 1884.  Details of the relief effort are found in The Mercy Mission.   

 

Ironton was founded in 1849 by John Campbell, a noted pig iron manufacturer.  Until the nearby iron reserves played out and the demand for steel replaced iron, immense wealth was generated.  Many fine residences were built.  Unfortunately the floods of 1917 and 1937 plus the Great Depression devastated the city.

 

Today, I was pleasantly surprised by the buzz in Ironton.  It by far is the most vibrant river town I have passed through.  Its community leaders are obviously  implementing good policies.  It was pouring so I did not get out of my car nor did I talk to anyone.  Like Pt Pleasant, Ironton has a wall between the river and town.  It also has a railroad track and station along the river.  

 

Lawrenceburg.  In 1865 a cub pilot aged nineteen on the sidewheeler CT Dumont made two important trips to Lawrenceburg, IN from Parkersburg, WV.  The occasion the return of Union Soldiers from the Civil War battlefields.  The cub pilot was George WE Poe, the son of Jacob Poe

 

Like many of the other river towns, Lawrenceburg is 200 years old with an appealing main street missed by most highway travelers because of the by-pass.  Early in its history, Lawrenceburg was notorious from Pittsburgh to New Orleans for its sin and vice.  After the advent of steamboat commerce, its “Gamblers Row” grew quickly. 

 

Today Lawrenceburg was surprisingly busy.  Nice main street leading to the “Watch Walk” which is a stone levee and park.  Nice when the weather and  river stage permit.

 

Vevay.  The “Life on the Ohio River” Historical Museum in Vevay, IN was a fun stop.  Its primary connections to Georgetown, PA is the Billy Bryant Showboat and the str CT Dumont.  The Bryants were always guests of Charley Poe when they landed in Georgetown.  In fact the friendship was so strong Billy Bryant dedicated a chapter in his book to Charley Poe who he described as “one of the most fascinating River characters we have ever met”.  At age nineteen while learning the river between Pittsburgh and Louisville, George WE Poe was a cub pilot on the CT Dumont which ferried two crammed loads of returning Civil War soldiers to Lawrenceburg in April 1865. Charley Poe and George WE Poe were brothers.

 

Vevay is a now stilled community of simple businesses and beautiful homes.  It has a wonderful park along its waterfront.  Founded in 1802 by Swiss immigrants, Vevay claims to be the home of the first commercial winery in the US.  Today there is no significant industry to the best of my knowledge.

A fun story I wanted to share from an unknown and undated newpaper clipping about George WE Poe.   This clipping is one of the sources I used to identify George WE Poe in my photos.  Many inherited photos are still unidentified.

George WE Poe lived a long life.  From piloting troop transports at at he end of the Civil War till his retirement in 1895, he saw and accomplished much.  His remaining days (48 years) were lived well in Georgetown, PA with an occasional business venture in Pittsburgh.

Georgetown Cemetery

I found a document listing the names of the people buried in the Georgetown Cemetery.   Names and dates will be entered into an MS Office Excel 2003 spreadsheet so that the data can be searched and sorted.  The earliest burial date listed was 1795.  On 24 Apr 1968 the Georgetown Cemetery Maintenance Association was chartered according to the document.  The document is 30 pages.  It is unsigned.

Oddly the first reported burial in the Georgetown Cemetery was James Clark.  He was reported to have been the last white man killed by Indians in Beaver County. In 1792 he was shot in what would later become Smith’s Ferry.  That burial predates the establishment of the cemetery according to the found document.

For thoses of you who dig graveyards (sorry about that) Georgetown Cemetery is the place to go to research the names of Georgetown people since the late 1790′s.

Letter – Keokuk Northern Line

I have decrypted a letter dated 1 Oct 1880 written by William Albert Calhoon on the Keokuk Northern Line letterhead .

“Dear Sister” is Parthenia Parr Calhoon (b 16 May 1855 in Georgetown, PA d 10 Jan 1946).  She had a twin brother named Joseph MC Calhoon – yes that was his middle name.  Joseph never married so I do not know who “one of Joe’s girls” would be mentioned in this letter. The “ Tom” in the letter was an older brother Thomas Franklin Calhoon.   Their father Joseph MC Calhoon (b 1823 d 21 Apr 1855) was a steamboat owner and captain who died of cholera while near St Louis.  The story of his death and the return of his body to Georgetown, PA is told in the Georgetown tale – The Body.   

In 1866 Parthenia Parr Calhoon, the wife of Joseph MC Calhoon, died.  Five young children were orphaned.  Capt George Washington Ebert ,  half brother of Parthenia Parr,  was appointed guardian of the five Calhoon children.  The Calhoon twins, Parthenia and Joseph, were reared in “The Poe House” by Mrs Jacob Poe (Mary Ann (Ebert) Poe, the sister of George W Ebert and half sister of Parthenia Parr).   From the 1870 Census Report, I assume the three older boys lived with Capt George W Ebert.

Parthenia Parr Calhoon (b 1855) spent her entire life with her aunt and the Poe family in “The Poe House”.  After Jacob Poe and his wife died, Parthenia continued to live in “The Poe House” with Charles Edgar Poe and his daughter Lillian May.  George WE Poe and his wife also lived in “The Poe House” at that time.  After Charley Poe died, Parthenia lived with her niece Lillian May and Lillian’s uncle, George WE Poe

It is quite confusing, but important when you think of the names associated with Aunt Parthenia.  Calhoon, Parr, Ebert, Poe - major names in Ohio River steamboat history.

The author of the letter, “Wm A”, was an older brother of Aunt Parthenia (William Albert Calhoon (b 13 Jan 1852 d 25 Oct 1889 unmarried)) .  He died of “consumption” after spending some time in a hospital in Cairo, IL in Jul 1889.  I have two letters dated 5 Jul 1889 written by William Albert to sister Parthenia Parr Calhoon and brother Thomas Franklin Calhoon.  These two letters were written on Cherokee Packet Company letterhead  four months before his death.    

In the Keokuk letter to Parthenia Parr Calhoon, William Albert mentioned several steamers.   The construction of the steamer Red Wing was supervised by Jacob Poe according to Capt Way’s Packet Directory.  The str Charlie Cheever (officially named Charles Cheever ) was a sternwheeler built in Brownsville, PA where many Poe boats were constructed, but I do not know its owner nor master.  The Annie was a sternwheeler built in 1877 for the Keokuk Line.  I have found no historical data on her owner or master.  

 

I do not know why William Albert Calhoon was traveling on the upper Mississippi at that time.  Whether the Poes and/or Calhoons had any interest in the Keokuk Packet Line or the Keokuk Northern Packet Line is unknown at this time.  More research and some luck is required to break through this mystery.

History in Homes

I have been experiencing a problem with large pages.  For an unknown reason I could not add photos or links to one large page.  To solve my problem, I split the page entitled ”It Used to be a River Town” into a history of Georgetown and a history of the steamboat captains homes.  The data about the homes has been placed in another page named “History in Homes.”   I have added more photos and as times permits, I will include copies of some of the deeds for the properties. 

 

There is one fun event description added.  The story about the preparations for the 35th wedding anniversary of Mollie Ebert and John A Trimble is notable.  The redecoration of their parlors by a “force of artists” from Pittsburgh, their elegant supper at 10:00 PM, gifts exchanged…  The details of the story were taken from a newspaper clipping from an unidentified local paper.  I will try to determine the name of the newspaper.
